The Canadian province of Quebec has its own separate immigration program, with a different set of eligibility criteria as compared to other provinces..
Canada has always embraced international talent, as it knows the importance of skilled foreign workers for the growth of its economy. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria set for immigration under the Express Entry program and have the intention to settle permanently in Canada can apply for permanent residence.
Below are the programs through which you can apply for Canadian immigration as a skilled worker:
Federal Skilled Worker Program
With effect from the year 2015, the Federal Skilled Worker Program now aligned under the Express Entry immigration system. The primary purpose of the Express Entry program is to speed up the processing times of visa applications for qualifying skilled workers to meet the labor market needs.
If you are one of those potential immigrants who are looking for a fast pathway to immigrate to Canada, then Express Entry is the best option you have.
Candidates have to first create an Express Entry profile, based on which they will be evaluated and provided a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. The CRS score is calculated based on several human capital factors;
these are:
- Age
- Work Experience
- Qualification
- Education
- Language ability (English or French)
- Adaptability
- Qualifying Canadian job offer
After getting in the Express Entry pool, you can still update your profile to improve your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Candidates with the highest scores in the Express Entry pool are issued an ITA for permanent resident status in Canada. The federal department aims to process all the applications within six months.
Quebec Skilled Worker Program
The Quebec Skilled Worker Program, also known as, Regular Skilled Worker Program, targets the applicants who are willing to live, work, and settle in Quebec. To apply for this program, candidates do not require any job offer. Moreover, Quebec does not have any official list of in-demand occupations.
The Canadian province of Quebec has different selection criteria to nominate applicants under its immigration programs. Through the Arrima portal, applicants have to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to start with the application. Here, the profile of the candidate will be assessed with a score out of 100. Candidates with the most competitive scores are issued a Quebec Selection Certificate, which acts as an ITA for permanent residence. Later this stage, the government starts assessing the criminal and medical aspects of the application.
Below are the selection criteria for Quebec Skilled Workers:
- Age
- Education
- Language Proficiency (French is highly considered)
- Work Experience
- Adaptability
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
All the provinces and territories in Canada have skilled worker programs to target prospective immigrants who want to settle and work in a specific Canadian province or territory. Candidates can directly apply through these streams, or else, they can get into the Express Entry pool and then submit an Expression of Interest for a second PNP profile. Not all the PNP streams are aligned with the Express Entry; however, if you have a provincial nomination, you will be rewarded with additional points.
Candidates must have relevant skills, qualifications, and work experience to apply for a PNP; that is, they must be able to contribute to the region’s economic growth. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria receive a provincial nomination and an ITA with the federal government to obtain permanent residency in Canada.
Below are the provinces participating in PNP:
- Ontario
- Alberta
- Manitoba
- British Columbia
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Prince Edward Island
- Saskatchewan
- Yukon
- Nova Scotia
- New Brunswick
- Northwest Territories
