Canada Allows Visa-Free Travel For Qatari Citizens

Canada allows visa-free travel for Qatari citizens. This new rule was announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on November 25, and it became active the same day at 5:30 a.m.

Under this change, Qatari travellers will only need an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to Canada.

This update is a major benefit for Qatari nationals because they no longer need to wait weeks for a Canadian visa. The eTA process is much faster. Most applications are approved within minutes, and applicants only need a valid passport, a payment card, and an email address.

Qatari citizens who currently hold a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) such as a work permit visa or study visa may continue using their TRV until it expires or until their passport expires.

How To Apply For An eTA?

Qatari travellers must get an eTA before boarding a flight to Canada. The process is simple and can be completed online. Here is how it works:

Prepare Your Documents

  • You will need your passport, a credit or debit card, and your personal details.
  •  It is helpful to read the instructions before filling out the form.

Complete The Online Application

  • Fill out the eTA form on the Government of Canada website.
  • You cannot save the form, so be sure you have all the information ready before you start.

Pay The Application Fee

  • The cost of an eTA is $7 CAD (about 18 Qatari Riyals).
  • You must pay it right after completing the form.

Receive Your eTA Decision

  • Most applications are approved within minutes, i.e., you will receive an email confirming your eTA status.

Sometimes, IRCC may ask for extra information. If so, you will get an email within 72 hours with details on what to submit.

Once approved, the eTA is linked electronically to your passport. It is valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever happens first.

During this period, you can enter Canada many times, as long as you meet all entry and security requirements.

Why Canada Removed Visa Requirements For Qatari Citizens?

As Canada allows visa-free travel for Qatari citizens, it is vital to note that it is part of a growing partnership between Canada and Qatar. Their relationship has strengthened in recent years through new agreements in trade, tourism, innovation, and air travel.

In 2011, the two countries signed the Canada–Qatar Air Transport Agreement, which allowed direct flights between Canada and Qatar. This agreement was updated in 2024, increasing flight frequency to seven weekly flights between Toronto and Doha.

Beyond air travel, trade between the two nations continues to expand. Key sectors include clean energy, agribusiness, and critical minerals. In 2024, total trade between Canada and Qatar reached more than $325 million CAD.

According to Lena Diab, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, removing the visa requirement will strengthen business and investment opportunities, support economic growth, and deepen the strong ties between both nations.
