As reported by Statistics Canada, Canadian employers have been waiting to fill in over 1 million job vacancies which account for 2.4 % compared to the previous months and 45 % compared to April of the last year.
According to Statistics Canada, the increase in percentage in April is because of the change in season. Usually, there are more job vacancies available in Spring and summer.
Alberta and Ontario peaked in job vacancies in April with 1.1 unemployed individuals concerning each job position. It has gone down from 1.2 in March and 2.4 a year before. As per reports, Newfoundland and Labrador comprised four unemployed individuals for each vacant job position.
The construction sector surprisingly witnessed 89,900 new job vacancies with an increase of 5.4 % from March onwards and 45 % from the previous year. Interestingly, job vacancies have broken employment records in scientific, technical, professional, transportation, and warehousing sectors. Other sectors that have also seen a record high include real estate, insurance and finance, entertainment, and recreation.
The health care and social assistance sector witnessed an unprecedented decrease of 15 percent. To be precise, the figure decreased from its peak in March, 147,500 to 125,200.
Continuous increase in Payroll employment
As officially reported by Statistics Canada, the provinces are observed to have regained the employment flow by either returning to previous standards or surpassing them. Previous standards imply pre-pandemic. Provinces including New Brunswick, British Columbia, and Prince Edward Island have reached their previous employment levels. The increase in employment levels is mainly due to the public health measures that have been uplifted from April onwards, allowing businesses to operate smoothly without restrictions.
An employment level increase was also observed in the education sector for the first time. It increased to 9,700 in April compared to the previous month and crossed the benchmark set in February 2020, before the pandemic broke out.
The employment increase was observed across the provinces of Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Quebec. More than the average monthly increase was due to elementary and secondary school services. The accommodation and food sector increased its employment by 10 percent since February. The above sector experienced growth in provinces such as Quebec and Ontario.
However, the employment level hasn’t crossed the pre-pandemic level in the food and accommodation sector. It might result from the lack of active businesses in the sector as last reported in February 2022.
Statistics Canada will release the job vacancy data for May 2022 on July 28, 2022. The second-quarter results of 2022 as per the Job Vacancy and Wage Survey shall be released on September 20, 2022.
