Earning a master’s degree from a Canadian postsecondary institution can greatly improve the chances of becoming a permanent resident. For many international students, higher education in Canada is not only about learning but also about building a long-term future in the country.
A Canadian master’s graduate can qualify for a three-year open work permit. This allows graduates to gain valuable Canadian work experience, which is an important requirement for several permanent residence pathways. At the same time, a master’s degree also increases points under Canada’s immigration ranking system.
Under Canada’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), a master’s degree gives a single applicant 135 points under core human capital factors. If the master’s degree is earned in Canada, it also provides an extra 30 points under the “additional points” section of the CRS.
Moreover, candidates with the highest CRS scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence through Express Entry. Express Entry manages Canada’s main economic immigration programs.
In many cases, holding a Canadian master’s degree can be the key factor that separates candidates who receive an ITA from those who do not.
It is important to note that not every person seeking permanent residence will choose to return to school. Some already have Canadian work experience or a PGWP, which may reduce the overall CRS gain from a master’s degree.
Still, any single applicant can gain at least 45 CRS points by moving from a foreign bachelor’s degree to a Canadian master’s degree. Those who already hold a Canadian bachelor’s degree can still gain 30 additional points by completing a Canadian master’s program.
In some situations, international students may not need to pay high costs for a master’s degree. Certain Canadian universities offer funding packages that may cover tuition or even exceed it, especially for academic master’s programs.
For Express Entry candidates with low CRS scores, a Canadian master’s degree can be a realistic and effective way to improve eligibility and move closer to receiving an ITA for permanent residence.
