Americans can attain Canadian citizenship even with one Canadian parent

It is easier to get Canadian citizenship for Americans with parents belonging to the first generation of Canadian citizens. Such Americans can obtain Canadian citizenship by descent.

To demonstrate your eligibility for citizenship, you will need to apply for citizenship proof.

You are allowed to apply irrespective of your age and even if your parents have passed away. The application fee will cost you around $75.

IRCC demands proof of citizenship from the applicants as evidence of their biological or legal parents having been Canadian citizens at their time of birth.

To demonstrate their citizenship, you can provide their birth certificate, card for Canadian citizenship, and certificate of citizenship.

There are two conditions related to your Canadian parent when you can apply online for proof of citizenship:

  • If the Canadian parent had attained citizenship on or after April 17, 2009.
  • If the Canadian parent had Canadian birth on or after February 15, 1977.

Apart from the online process, you can also submit the paper application physically.

It is the responsibility of IRCC to check whether the application is complete or not once you apply for proof of citizenship. If IRCC finds everything okay with your application, you will also receive an acknowledgment receipt. Suppose your application case gets completed, IRCC might contact you to check for further details or even ask for more documents. It might take longer to process complicated cases.

Suppose your application gets approved, then you will receive Canada’s citizenship certificate.

The proof of citizenship document holds the key to a smooth stay in Canada because it will provide you with several Canadian benefits such as a Canadian passport, a chance to vote in elections, Universal healthcare, and other privileges. You could even still hold on to your U.S citizenship.

Getting in touch with expert help such as an immigration lawyer or consultant can help you in an easier application process. You will be able to get help in meeting all the essential requirements and also achieve Canadian citizenship without any unwanted and unnecessary delays.
