Canada emerges as the world’s safest country for travelers in 2024. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection released a report recently and acknowledged Canada as the safest in the world for travelers (2023-2024).
Notably, BHTP observed that the total rankings depend on the State of Travel Insurance Research initiatives. It is a blend of six sub-category scores and are the parameters for these rankings.
Moreover, BHTP adds that it is typical for the GeoSure Global scores of the major cities in each country. In addition, it evens out its own surveyed ratings with other indicators and knowledge. This includes the Global Peace Index and the State Department’s travel safety ratings.
BHTP determines an average score reflecting each country’s absolute safety by combining these metrics.
Canada emerges as the world’s safest country for travelers in 2024 – The ranking is five spots ahead compared to a year ago
Last year (in 2023), Canada held the sixth rank in the BHTP report, which means it is now five rankings ahead of last year. In 2024, the country climbed to the topmost position for travelers. The report claims the country has acquired this first ranking due to chief factors like reduced population and cold weather. These two appear to be the primary reasons for Canada being known as the safest country this year.
The BHTP report also consisted of a section called “What you need to watch out for.” This section comprises each of the fifteen countries in the BHTP positions.
However, this section highlighted the area of concern in Canada, reflecting on the wildlife fires further declining the air quality in most Canadian cities. Consequently, several people faced challenges while traveling as they had respiratory concerns. The Gap Year Travel Store concludes that Canada is still by far the safest country because of its reduced violence and gun-related criminal activities.
Canada’s ranking sub-category-wise
The BHTP report considers the following parameters to generate a total ranking of the safest countries to travel:
- Safety from violent criminal activities.
- Protection from Terrorism.
- Safety concerning transportation.
- Health initiatives and diseases also.
- Group safety (women, LGBTQ+ travelers, and travelers of color)
These sub-categories were a part of the ranking process, and Canada acquired the first position in all the categories.
BHTP positions according to age and income
BHTP claims that the survey participants for 2023-2024 had drastically different opinions on the world’s safest countries based on their income and age. However, in a majority of situations, Canada continued to be among the four safest countries in the world based on the above sub-groups.
Here’s a summary of how Canada’s position would have been different based on the varied opinions of a specific group of participants compared to all positions.
Gen Z
The Gen Z who participated in the BHTP poll marked Canada as the topmost country for its safety.
Millennials
Millennials who participated in the BHTP survey ranked Canada fourth for being the safest country, following Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Survey participants who earned more than $200,000
Among the BHTP survey participants under the household income category, Canada achieved the second position in the complete list of safety after Portugal.
Participants with an annual travel expenditure of over $25,000
The BHTP survey participants under the category of travel expenditure ranked Canada at the sixth position after the Netherlands, Hungary, the UK, the Bahamas, and Portugal.
Mature survey participants
The report has not mentioned the age group of these “mature” survey participants. However, whoever fell under this category ranked Canada in the ninth position for being the safest country for traveling purposes. Canada achieved this position, according to this group of survey participants, after the following countries:
- Iceland
- South Korea
- Sweden
- Japan
- Denmark
- Norway
- New Zealand
- Ireland
Parents as the survey respondents
According to parents who participated in the BHTP survey, Canada is the safest country for traveling.
LGBTQ+ Travelers
Unlike all other categories, LGBTQ+ travelers didn’t include Canada among the top ten safest countries for traveling. This is by far the only sub-group category not to include Canada in the safest country list per the BHTP survey.
