Canada has become the fastest-growing country in G7

Immigration has become an essential component in the population gain of Canada recently. The data was made available by 2021 census data. On 11th May 2021, the data was captured by Statistics Canada.

The latest findings demonstrate that Canada beat other countries in G7. The maple country was able to grow at twice the speed as compared to France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S. Even when the pandemic disrupted the economy of Canada; the country continued to be the fastest-growing one.

Canada has a population of close to 37 million as of now. As mentioned earlier, the growth is a result of increased immigration from throughout the world. Around 1.8 million were added to Canada’s population. Of the total, four out of five were immigrants with temp/permanent statuses. The remaining increase happened due to natural causes.

Internal Growth in Canada.

Since the 1940s, the Maritimes’ headcount increment has not been able to outperform the Prairies’ until 2021.

Yukon witnessed the fastest growth during the last five years. If we talk about provinces, British Columbia and the Prince Edward Islands were the top performers. Only Newfoundland and Labrador faced a decline in the population count.

Rural areas were beaten by the urban developments as foreigners are likely to settle in cities. Urban areas grew 6.3% in five years, whereas it stood at 0.4% for rural regions.

Canada had 35 cities with more than 100,000 folks in 2016. However, the number of cities increased to 41 in 2021. The inclusions are:

  1. Fredericton, New Brunswick;
  2. Red Deer, Alberta;
  3. Kamloops, B.C.;
  4. Drummondville, Quebec;
  5. Chilliwack, B.C.; and
  6. Nanaimo, B.C.

Resort destinations also witnessed a good pace in populations growth during this period. Some communities were able to grow at a decent rate. They are:

  • Squamish, B.C.;
  • Canmore, Alberta;
  • Wasaga Beach, Ontario; and
  • Collingwood, Ontario.

A significant contributor to population growth

Since the 90s, immigration has played a major role in boosting the Canadian population. Similar to other nations in G7, fertility is not sufficient to help the country grow.

The influx of people has become higher than those who are deciding to leave Canada. The low fertility rate and emigration count indicates that the major contributor to the increasing population is immigration. The land of maple has been increasing its immigration target over the years since 2015.

More data will be available on the census by October this year.
