The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) received a $768,000 investment from Ontario in late March. The “Addressing Barriers to Employment for Muslim Women” is CCMW’s initiative. This measure intends to benefit from this money in order to “confront employment obstacles for women by emphasizing increased recruitment, retention, and advancement in non-traditional and flourishing economic sectors.”
This specific investment is being made to address the disparities that Canadian women experience. Moreover, it highlights the importance for organizations nationwide to strive towards removing obstacles for women in this country. This is particularly true for immigrant women in Canada, who still have difficulty getting fair representation in the labor sector.
Here’s an overview of the process through which Canada aims to boost the growth of newcomer women arriving here. This will be done at the federal and provincial levels with the help of IRCC.

The Racialized Newcomer Women Pilot Program and Women at Risk. WAR, a component of the Urgent Protection Program (UPP), is two of the federal programs and services offered by IRCC to women immigrating to Canada.
A WAR Program
Women at Risk is a program (WAR) run by IRCC that assists women who need immediate protection or may be at risk. But don’t require to show that they possess settlement potential.
Note: To qualify for assistance through the Urgent Protection Program (UPP), women participating in this program, together with any dependents they may have, must still pass all necessary Canadian entrance exams, including medical, security, etc.
RNWP Program
The RNWP program opens up significant opportunities for racialized newcomer women to participate completely with equality in Canada’s economy. Further, this offers newcomer women in Canada settlement services and support to improve their employment outcomes and career advancement.
Canada to boost the growth of newcomer women at the provincial or territorial level
Every province and territory in Canada provides assistance through regional organizations that assist immigrant women in several things. It could be anything ranging from their daily life adjusting to the country to finding work, preparing for a future citizenship exam, and even finding a coach (or becoming one).
British Columbia
Women’s Economic Council, a registered charity in Vancouver, works to ” promote every woman’s engagement in building sustainable and equitable economies, especially women who encounter numerous structural hurdles.”
A nonprofit that assists recent immigrants and refugees of all kinds, Umoja Operation Compassion Society (Surrey) offers specialized programs to assist immigrants with everyday life and employment opportunities. They also provide services tailored especially for ladies.
Alberta
Umoja Operation Compassion Society (Surrey), a nonprofit, aids fresh immigrants and refugees of all kinds. Additionally, it provides specialized programs to help immigrants with day-to-day needs and work prospects. They even offer services designed exclusively for women.
Alberta’s Making Changes Employment Association (Calgary): This organization offers assistance to women looking for work. Making Changes is “dedicated to fostering a safe environment while assisting in the advancement of women’s futures in our community.”
Saskatchewan
LEAD (Saskatoon), an organization for international women, The International Women of Saskatchewan, offers numerous programs and services for Canadian newcomer women, ranging from career and job search assistance to specialized language tests, settlement resources, as well as social engagement tools.
Manitoba
Manitoba Start – Employment Solutions for Immigrants Inc. in Winnipeg: An employment services organization that provides assistance to immigrants with obtaining jobs and adjusting to daily life in Canada, including programs tailored for women.
Ontario
Access Alliance Multicultural Health & Community Services (Toronto) is an organization that offers services to immigrants and refugees with the mission of “improving health outcomes for those who are victims of systemic barriers and poverty.
According to their website, Immigrant Women Services Ottawa provides programs and services that are concentrated in three main areas:
- settlement and integration;
- interpretation and translation;
- crisis intervention and counseling
Quebec
Women’s Centre of Montreal: A group that assists recent women immigrants throughout the immigration process by offering services to promote settlement and acceptance through individual counseling and social activities.
Newfoundland and Labrador
The Association for New Canadians in St. John’s is a “non-profit, community-based organization providing settlement and integration services to immigrants and refugees. These include programs that encourage all aspects of immigrant integration. They could range from settlement information and orientation to language learning, skills development, and employment.
Nova Scotia
One of the 32 YWCA locations in Canada, Halifax, focuses on the following:
- Promoting the leadership, health, and welfare of women and girls;
- Encouraging women’s economic and housing security;
- Ensuring accessible, developmental, and quality early learning, along with childcare; and
- Aiming toward abolishing violence against women and girl child.
Prince Edward Island
Immigrant & Refugee Services Association PEI Inc.- A company in Charlottetown providing a wide range of services for newcomers to Canada, such as language classes and assistance in finding work.
New Brunswick
The overall objective of the non-profit Northwest Resource Centre for Newcomers Inc. (Edmundston) is to “assist newcomers who come to the area to simplify their social, economic, educational, and cultural incorporation.” In addition to socializing and assistance services, they provide assets, learning, and mentorship services.
Nunavut
Carrefour Nunavut (Iqaluit) is a French-speaking organization that provides assistance to job seekers, recent immigrants, employees, and business owners.
Northwest Territories
NWT Literacy Council (Yellowknife): A not-for-profit and officially recognized charitable organization encouraging and fostering literacy and crucial skills in NWT’s official languages.
Yukon
Association franco-yukonnaise (Whitehorse): A French-speaking group that offers particular services for immigrant women, such as assistance in traversing everyday life and locating jobs.
