Canada witnessed maximum PR admissions in 2022, accounting for at least 430,000 new permanent residents. IRCC confirmed in its latest announcement that Canada accomplished a record-breaking target for admitting permanent residents last year.
Canada witnessed maximum PR admissions in 2022
Interestingly, the one-year target for PR admissions is higher than the 2021 record of 401,000 new permanent residents. This makes for an extraordinary record in Canadian history with the highest PR admissions in a single year.
Moreover, the immigration minister stated recently that this accomplishment marked another milestone in Canada. This new number of admissions has also set a new record for new immigrants in one year. He also considers this as the strength and resilience of Canada and its people. Moreover, newcomers have a significant role to play in bridging Canadian labor shortages and introducing new perspectives and skilled people to communities. The main idea is to enhance the entire society. Fraser further stated that he was eager to witness future prospects in 2023 by welcoming more immigrants to Canada.
IRCC’s initiatives
In 2022, IRCC put in several efforts and even processed 5.2 million applications across all business fields. These applications centered around permanent residence, temporary residence, and citizenship. Also, this number of applications is twice the number of applications processed in 2021.
There are a variety of factors influencing this success in processing applications. These include the introduction of new technology and resources, systematic processing of applications, and an increase in applications. The Canadian government also talked about a bigger investment of $50 million to IRCC between 2022 and 2023. This was an attempt by the government to combat the application backlog. Moreover, the application backlog stood at 1.09 million as of November 30, 2022.
Canada’s high immigration targets for 2023 to 2025
Canada’s highest admission targets are a part of the latest Immigration Levels Plan from 2023 to 2025. The 2022 plan emerged in February with the maximum target levels for immigration for the upcoming years until 2025.
According to reports, the Canadian labor force is almost entirely dependent on immigration. Approximately one million Canadian job vacancies and a shortage of skilled workforce due to the aging Canadian population are prevalent in the country. Canada considers immigrants as the most crucial part of the Canadian economy. Overall, approximately nine million working Canadians (above 65 years) will be reaching their retirement by 2030. As estimated, the aging Canadian population will transit drastically from 7: 1 (50 years before) to 2:1 by 2035.
With Canada’s reduced birth rate at 1.4 children per woman, 75 percent of the Canadian population relies heavily on immigration. The Census 2021 claims that Canada welcomed around 1.3 million new permanent residents from 2016 to 2021. Also, Canada looks forward to receiving more immigrants to enhance the Canadian population. As per statistics, at least one out of every four respondents claimed to be either a Canadian permanent resident or a landed immigrant. By far, this accounts for the highest proportion of G7 countries since Confederation. According to official data, around 36 percent of the Canadian population will consist of immigrants by 2036.
From the future perspective, Canada looks forward to accomplishing its higher target of welcoming 500,000 new permanent residents toward the end of 2025. Moreover, the target for 2023 remains 465,000 newcomers.
