Canada’s Latest Express Entry Draw Targets PNP Applicants

Canada’s latest Express Entry draw targets PNP applicants. The number of applicants invited was 763. Moreover, in order to be considered, applicants required a minimum CRS score of 690.

The recent draw is August’s first draw and follows an unprecedented number of Express Entry draws through July. IRCC issued over  25,000 ITAs to applicants in nine separate draws.

This implies that July had the most Express Entry draws of any month since the system was launched in 2015. It marks a significant comeback from a slow June wherein only one draw took place.

Four of the July draws were category-based selection draws. Out of them, two were for candidates who met the criteria for French language proficiency. Also, the July 18 draw for this category featured the lowest CRS score of the month.

The other two category-based draws issued ITAs to candidates in the healthcare as well as trade professions.

Among the remaining five draws, two were program-specific for the Canadian Experience Class, while three were for applicants who were in the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). The highest CRS score of the month was for PNP applicants on July 2.

After a year of category-based selection and general draw, the number of program-specific draws shows that the department is delivering on its objective to hold more domestic draws for permanent residency applicants already residing in Canada. This is part of IRCC’s declaration that it will work to reduce the number of temporary residents in Canada while also striving to fulfill its target for permanent resident admissions.

What Is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an application management system responsible for managing economic immigration candidates who can easily integrate into Canada’s economy and workforce.

It uses the Comprehensive Ranking System to manage applications for three programs: FSTP, FSWP, and CEC.

In addition, the system evaluates and ranks candidates based on human capital factors such as age, education, language proficiency, work experience, etc. Every factor is given a score, and the sum is the applicant’s overall CRS score. Applicants with the highest scores receive an invitation to apply for permanent residency.

What Is Category-Based Selection?

Canada’s latest Express Entry draw targets PNP applicants. Category-based selection rounds of invitations were introduced in May 2023 as a pathway for IRCC to target Express Entry candidates who are likely to either fill an urgent workforce need or help the department reach a particular target.

IRCC states that it has decided on the six categories following months of consultation with potential stakeholders. The categories are:

  • Healthcare
  • Trades
  • Transport
  • STEM Professions
  • Agriculture/ Agri-Food
  • French Language Proficiency

The recently released Express Entry year-end report for 2023 found that candidates in the STEM category obtained most ITAs throughout the year, followed by French language applicants.
