Canadian employment trends 2022- Labour Force Survey report

The Canadian employment trends 2022 displays that Canadian employment rose by more than 100,000 in December. The Labour Force Survey analyzed the general employment pattern observed last year in December. Furthermore, the reports claim that Canadian employment increased by 0.5 percent in December, with additional 104,000 jobs. On the other hand, the unemployment rate (on a national level) declined to 5.0 percent, implying a monthly -0.1 percent.

Canadian employment trends 2022 throughout Canada

Most Canadian newcomers prefer the country for its higher pay scale, the rich standard of life, and steady employment. The survey also reported that Canada in December 2022 witnessed growth at a healthier level regarding employees’ hourly wages (on average). Moreover, the hourly wages continue to be above five percent for seven months consecutively. The average hourly wage rises by 5.1 percent on a Year-on-Year basis.

Additionally, employment in the private sector is the main reason for the increased Canadian employment. Interestingly, Canadian employment in the private sector rose by 112,000 in December. However, self-employed individuals and those in the public sector didn’t witness an increase in the industries in the previous month.

Several age groups also experienced employment growth in Canada. Also, individuals between 15 and 24 years with employment increased to 69,000, a rise of 2.7 percent. Besides this, employment increased with an additional 31,000 jobs for individuals aged 55 years or above.

Employment trends based on industry

Healthcare and social assistance witnessed an employment decline of 0.7 percent, that is, by 17,000 jobs in December 2022. During this timeframe, Canadian employment saw a rise across all seven industries compared to the previous Labour Force Survey. They’re as follows:

  • Construction industry– The construction industry in Canada increased up to 2.3 percent, with additional 35,000 jobs in the month of December.
  • Transportation and Warehousing industry– This industry witnessed an employment increase of 3.0 percent, with 29,000 additional jobs in December 2022.
  • Accommodation and Food Services– Industry employment rose by 1.2 percent, with more than 13,000 additional workers working in this industry compared to last month.
  • Professional, Technical, and Scientific Services– This industry saw an increase in employment by more than 1 percent, and the number of employed people increased by 23,000.
  • Public Administration– The public administration industry saw an employment rise of 0.9 percent, with 11,000 additional jobs. Also, this increase occurred between November and December 2022.
  • Other services– Compared to December 2022, additional 10,000 individuals are currently working in the industry, showing an increase of 1.3 percent.

Provincial or territorial employment patterns

Six Canadian provinces in December 2022 witnessed increased employment, including British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, and Labrador. Additionally, the Ontario province witnessed high employment by 0.5 percent, that is, additional 42,000 jobs. However, the YOY basis claims an increase of 1.4 percent. To wrap up the last month of 2022, the unemployment rate declined to 5.3 percent. Year-On-Year basis saw a decline of 0.8 percent. Besides this, Alberta’s employment saw an increase of 25,000 additional jobs, with only 1 percent.

However, the unemployment rate remained firm at 5.8 percent. Meanwhile, the employment rate increased by 3.9 percent, and the unemployment rate deteriorated to 1.7 percent points (YOY basis in Alberta).

The rest of the four Canadian provinces underwent the following results for the month of December 2022:

  • British Columbia– In December 2022, employment increased by 0.6 percent, with 1,7000 jobs. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate stood firm at 4.2 percent.
  • Manitoba– Employment in Manitoba went up by 1 percent, with 7,000 jobs. Conversely, unemployment across the province remained stagnant at 4.4 percent in December 2022.
  • Saskatchewan– Also, employment in Saskatchewan rose by 0.7 percent during the same time, with 4,200 jobs. Contrarily, the unemployment rate changed slightly to 4.1 percent.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador– The employment rate in Newfoundland and Labrador rose by 2.9 percent during December last year. However, this province underwent the highest unemployment rate of 10.1 percent among all other Canadian provinces.

Overall, the Canadian provinces witnessed a steady employment rate in December 2022. On the other hand, in Quebec, the unemployment rate was at 4 percent. Meanwhile, the YOY employment rate increased by 1.8 percent in Quebec, and the unemployment rate dropped by 0.7 percent on a Year-Over-Year Basis.

Additionally, talking about the three Canadian territories and their quarterly employment updates, Yukon’s unemployment rate increased to 2.3 percent and 4.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022. Overall, the three territories witnessed consistent quarterly employment and unemployment rates.
