Canadian population growth of 94.5 % resulted from immigration

Statistics Canada released its latest report about the Canadian population growth from April to June 2022. Not only did the report reveal a rough estimate of the population, but it also justified immigration as the primary reason for Canada’s population growth.

StatsCan revealed the estimated Canadian population growth

The approximate population growth in Canada is around 38,929,902 individuals. According to the data, quarter 2 witnessed an increase of 0.7 percent as compared to quarter 1. The report for quarter one was released on April 1, 2022.

It is crucial to understand that this data concerning the current population growth in Canada is derived from the 2016 Census counts. Also, the latest data concerns the Canadian population growth from May 10, 2016, to 2021’s approximate date.

Reasons behind the population growth

International immigration is one of the primary reasons leading to the Canadian population growth of 94.5 %. It further implies an increase of 269,305 individuals.

Immigration to Canada from different corners of the world didn’t drive a drastic growth in the population since 2019 quarter 3.

There were around 175,907 new immigrants in quarter 3 (2019), and even then, the newcomers didn’t contribute much to the Canadian population. However, in quarter 2, the maximum number of immigrants in Canada accounted for 118,114 immigrants.

The second quarter of 2022 witnessed several new additions to the population growth of Canada. These new additions include work and study permit holders, Ukrainian victims, and asylum claimants. The estimated figure of such people accounts for more than 157,310 individuals.

More details of the growth rate of the population

The Canadian population grew in the last quarter of 2022 by 284,982 individuals. This approximate figure represented an enhanced number of more than 3,100 Canadians each day.

The above figure for increased population reflects the largest growth rate in Canada since 1949, a time when Newfoundland and Labrador became a part of the Confederation.

Statistics Canada’s latest data also indicates the highest population increase since 1957, its third quarter. This was also the time when the baby boom rate was more than 0.8 %.

International immigration- its role

International immigration and IRCC’s immigration targets work in close alignment. Therefore, as expected, international migration immensely impacted the population in Canada.

Initially, in the pandemic phase, Canada faced challenges due to reduced immigration. Later on, it tried to balance the loss by increasing the immigration levels by welcoming an increased number of newcomers. The main concern still lies with an aging population and extremely reduced lower birth rates.

The country continued to embrace more than 430,000 new permanent residents every year. On the whole, international immigration is likely to play a crucial role in the growth rate of the Canadian population in the upcoming years.

What lies ahead?

The Canadian immigration minister is yet to table its new immigration strategy for Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025 by November 1. The updated strategy is an initiative to show their efforts and work on immigration.
