Canadian stay extension for Iranians with temporary visas

Canadian stay extension for Iranians with temporary status is a new initiative by the Canadian government. This simply implies that Iranians who are temporary visa holders will now be able to prolong their stay in Canada. From March 1, 2023, the Canadian government will introduce new measures to assist Iranians.

Canadian stay extension for Iranians- new measures by the Canadian government

The Canadian government will take the following initiatives:

  • Ensure that individuals living in Canada based on a temporary visa (for work or study purposes) can apply to extend their stay from within Canada.
  • Prioritize the applications of Iranians residing in Canada.
  • Iranians who are already staying in Canada will be able to access a new Open Work Permit pathway. Foreign nationals, in general, can choose any employer and work anywhere within Canada under an Open Work Permit.
  • Iranians who seek to prolong their stay in Canada can get relaxation in specific processing fees.
  • They might also not be required to pay passport or travel document PR fees with Canadian citizenship and those with Permanent Residency.

IRCC will soon display detailed information on its official website. Jonathan Wilkinson (Canadian Natural Resources Minister) discussed these new initiatives in place of Sean Fraser.

The Canadian government also stated during a Press Release that it would further look into the essential requirements of Iranians. Moreover, it will take more measures accordingly.

Iran is on the list of top immigration sources for Canada

IRCCs latest report and data claim that Iran turned out to be the 8th major source of immigration for Canada in 2022. Overall, around 11,105 Iranians acquired Permanent Residency in 2022. Apart from this, Iranian nationals became a prominent source of Canadian study permit holders. Per the record data, 21,115 Iranian students exist in this country, which stands true as of December 31, 2022.

Interestingly, Census data for 2021 also states that 200,000 individuals with Iranian nationality exist in Canada.

Overall, nearly 68 percent of the Iranian population lives in Vancouver and Toronto.
