Family Sponsorship’s Minimum Necessary Income- an overview

Family Sponsorship’s Minimum Necessary Income is an essential requirement to demonstrate that they are financially responsible for assisting their family members when required.

The income need varies according to the number of sponsored family members, the number of sponsored family members, and whether the sponsor resides in Canada or Quebec.

Family Sponsorship’s Minimum Necessary Income- knowing the details

Some family sponsorship programs require sponsors to meet minimum income requirements to support themselves, their family members, and the individuals they wish to sponsor. The ability of the sponsor to provide for their family members relies on the evaluation using MNI levels by IRCC. Applications for family sponsorship will only get consideration if the applicant can meet the NMI requirements for their family size.

Family Size Unit- who will be a part of this?

Depending on who the sponsor is presently supporting in Canada and who they intend to sponsor, knowing the Family Size Unit is possible. In order to determine a family unit, you would need to include the following:

  • A person’s spouse or partner
  • The individual
  • Their dependent children
  • Dependent children of their spouse or partner
  • Parents and grandparents seek to sponsor
  • The spouse, partner, or dependent children of their parents and grandparents
  • It could also be someone they must have already sponsored in the past while they still hold financial responsibility for them.

Including spouses, partners, or dependent children of their parents and grandparents is also crucial.

Parents and Grandparents Program Sponsorship- the Minimum Necessary Income

Only Canadian sponsors who have exceeded their MNI for three straight tax years are eligible for parent and grandparent sponsorships. However, Quebec is an exception. By fulfilling this condition, sponsors can show they can take on the financial responsibilities that frequently accompany looking after older family members and bringing them to Canada.

The MNI requirements for sponsors under the 2022 Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship are shown in the given table.

The MNI for people residing in Canada outside of Quebec is shown in the figures below:
