Five-year staying extension in Canada for Super Visa holders

Super Visa, a temporary visa, is an enticing option for the citizens of Canada and permanent residents who would want to get their parents and grandparents to Canada.

It is a multi-entry visitor visa with a validity of 10 years. Significant changes are being made to the Super Visa and will come into effect from July 4.

The following changes will impact the Super Visa:

  • The stay duration for Super Visa holders will extend up to 5 years per person entering Canada.
  • Those individuals currently residing in Canada through the Super Visa can also extend their stay up to two years. This implies that Canadians already staying in Canada can stay longer, up to seven years.
  • The immigration minister of Canada, Mr. Fraser will be authorized to allow the international medical companies to financially cover the applicants holding Super Visa.

The previous Super Visa permitted its holders to continue staying up to two years at every entry. Additionally, only the insurance providers in Canada were supposed to provide the medical coverage that the Super Visa applications were expected to have.

The changes and reforms in the Super Visa now let the parents and grandparents live in Canada for five years consecutively without renewing the visa. Super Visa also allows individuals to get medical insurance from countries other than Canada.

Kyle Seeback, a Canadian politician who proposed the idea of bringing reforms to the Super Visa believes that foreign medical insurance could save thousands of dollars for families every year. He is confident that the framework for international insurance companies, which the government decided, will cover the medical costs if the Super Visa holders suffered from sickness.

Super Visa is an alternative to the PGP (Parents and Grandparents program). PGP is excessively in demand and the demand for sponsors surpasses the availability of spots. IRCC is believed to have received over 200,000 interests for sponsorship in a year. However, there are only 35,000 existing applications.

Additionally, IRCC even conducted lotteries to finalize the applicants for PGP. The lottery process sounds unfair to many as those who’ve just entered the Express Entry pool may get a chance compared to those who have stayed longer in the pool.

There are no lottery requirements to get a Super Visa, which assures families. Attaining a Super Visa takes lesser time compared to a PGP because Super Visa might take months but PGP might even take years to be processed. The parents and grandparents can have more time to stay in Canada and getting a Visa renewal will not be needed upon re-entry until its validity has expired.
