Immigrants with Canadian education earned better incomes, according to the latest revelation by Statistics Canada. The revelation is part of a study in 2022 that analyzed the connection between immigrants with Canadian education and their immigration earnings. The chief finding of the study claims that economic principal applicants with Canadian education backgrounds earned higher incomes during two years of their immigration. Their earnings rose primarily due to their language proficiency in Canada’s official language and considerable Canadian work experience.
Canada’s international students have the authority to work in Canada while studying, and they might gain eligibility for a Post-Graduation Work Permit once they complete their graduation. This will enable them to acquire considerable Canadian work experience. Furthermore, they will have the eligibility to acquire Permanent Residency through over a hundred economic immigration streams.
Additionally, those immigrants with Canadian education were mainly younger, highly educated, with higher language proficiency, and possessed pre-immigration earnings in Canada. This was in contrast to those who didn’t hold any studying experience in Canada.
Immigrants with Canadian education- what are the advantages in the future?
The Statistics Canada report also claimed that those with Canadian study experience tend to earn lesser in the initial years compared to those who didn’t have any such experience. This was in contrast with the applicants who had similar language profiles and Canadian work experience before immigration. Also, this was mostly due to their increased tendency to pursue further education in the first years of Canadian immigration.
However, the significant advantage of acquiring an education in Canada occurred in the long term. Since economic immigrants worked harder in the Canadian labor market, focusing less on the pre-arrival characteristics. As a result, the earning benefits increased for those studying in Canada.
Per Statistics Canada, formal education offered at Canada’s educational institutions lets students acquire high-quality professional skills aligning with the Canadian labor market. Additionally, it offers them the potential to establish well within the Canadian economy and workforce.
The process of studying in Canada
In order to gain Canadian education, they must carefully select a Designated Learning Institution and apply there. They will also need a letter of acceptance from the DLI. After gaining acceptance at the DLI, they must proceed to apply to IRCC for a study permit.
However, to gain eligibility to obtain a study permit in Canada, they must fulfill the following conditions:
- Demonstrate that they possess adequate finances to assist themselves in the first year, covering their tuition fee, departure ticket for the home country, and other living expenditures.
- In case the candidates seek to pursue their education in Quebec, they must acquire a Quebec Acceptance Certificate.
- Display a zero criminal history and provide a Police Clearance Certificate if requested by IRCC.
- Show that they are living healthy and have good health conditions. IRCC might request a complete medical test.
- They must be able to convince the immigration officer that they will exit Canada once their legal stay (per the study permit) is over.
Canadian education leading to Permanent Residency
Usually, when international graduates complete their graduation from Canadian post-secondary institutions, they mostly seek to prolong their stay and acquire Permanent Residence. Those seeking to become PR holders might leverage Canadian education to their advantage. This is large because most federal and provincial immigration programs would emphasize candidates showing Canadian immigration and work experience.
Also, they become eligible to gain PGWP after completing their Canadian education. Post-Graduation Work Permits allow them to gain Canadian work experience for up to a maximum of three years.
If they seek PGWP eligibility, they must fulfill the following requirements:
- They must have completed education in an academic, vocational, and professional training program, with a minimum of eight months of training from an eligible DLI.
- Their study program must lead to a degree, certificate, or diploma.
- During each of their study program’s academic sessions, they must hold full-time Canadian student status. They must have even included this within their PGWP application.
- Acquired an official transcript and letter from the DLI. This will act as a confirmation to the applicant that he has fulfilled all requirements to complete their study program.
Candidates can apply to federal and provincial PR programs, including the Express Entry and PNPs using a PGWP.
Express Entry
Express Entry handles the IRCC applications and is the chief way the Canadian government invites economic-class immigrants. The Express Entry system manages the three primary economic-class programs: the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the FSWP, and Canadian Experience Class. Each program has essential eligibility criteria. Additionally, the candidate will obtain a score under the Comprehensive Ranking System. The CRS provides scores to candidates based on their profile (including various factors) and verifies their ability to compete within the Canadian labor market.
Mostly, the Canadian government will conduct Express Entry draws once in two weeks. IRCC further invites candidates to apply for Canadian PR, and these are all high-scoring candidates.
Provincial Nominee Programs
The Provincial Nominee Programs enable Canadian provinces or territories to select and nominate candidates seeking to become Permanent Resident holders. This applies to those who seek to reside in a specific province. There are more than 80 immigration streams particularly designed for graduates, entrepreneurs, and workers. Applicants also have the right to apply directly to a PNP stream. However, the province will make sure that the candidate fulfills eligibility criteria and, thereby, issue a letter of nomination. Furthermore, they can proceed to apply to IRCC for PR.
If, supposedly, the candidate is applicable for Express Entry, they might increase their ITAs by acquiring provincial nomination. If the province finds the candidate to be a good fit for it, the province will notify them to apply for provincial nomination.
Undoubtedly, a candidate with a provincial nomination will reflect an additional 600 points under the CRS. This will also guarantee them an invitation to apply for the upcoming Express Entry draw.
Usually, international graduates have two prominent pathways to acquire Permanent Residence; they will also have other alternatives through Quebec and the federal government.
For instance, the Quebec Experience Program is an expedited process for foreign students to obtain a Quebec Selection Certificate. This was an essential step toward acquiring PR.
Lastly, international students can access the Atlantic Immigration Program as well as the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot as the other economic immigration pathways the federal government provides.
