Designated Learning Institutions – (DLI) – An overview
A DLI – (Designated Learning Institution) is an institution that accepts international students. A DLI’s letter of acceptance is necessary to obtain a study permit for Canada. To qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit – (PGWP), you need to pick the right school and program, as only some Designated Learning Institutions offer this.
DLI number must be provided by the applicant for the preferred educational institution. It is indicated on the study permit application form by the number that starts with the letter “O.”
Exemptions of DLI
It may not be necessary for students to submit a DLI letter or number with their application in certain circumstances. Situations such as these may arise in the following areas, but are not limited to:
- Students in elementary schools or high schools. All of these are automatically assigned DLI numbers without the need to provide one.
- Prior to entering Canada, a foreign national’s family member must have been granted an employment or study permit. An open study visa may be applied for by the family member in this situation.
- The provincial government of Quebec has designated several institutions, however, they do not all have distinctive DLI numbers.
What if Institution loose DLI status?
The designation of an institution may be revoked occasionally. Depending on when the student’s status is lost, the impact will be different.
- If someone presents a letter of acceptance from a university that is not in the DLI, their study permit will be rejected.
- Applicants who have received a letter of acceptance from DLI but find out that the institution has lost its designated status before applying for a permit have three options. The following steps could be taken:
- Withdrawal of the application is recommended.
- If you have been accepted to a different DLI, please provide the admission letter.
- When no further action is taken, a decision will be made on the basis of the data that you provided. Due to this, the application will not be approved.
In the event that the institution loses its designation after students are granted study permits for DLIs, they have two options. This person could do the following:
- Switch to a different DLI.
- Students may continue their studies at non-designated institutions until their study permit expires. The non-designated institution cannot extend its study authorization due to this circumstance.
