IRCC approved the work permit extension for a few PNP candidates. This initiative attempts to extend the temporary resident status for specific nominees under the Provincial Nominee Program, responding positively to Manitoba’s government’s request.
IRCC approved work permit extension for a few PNP candidates
According to IRCC, all the nominees possess work permits that will expire in 2024, primarily including Post-Graduation Work Permit holders. These people have Manitoba Skilled Worker Program applications within the pool. This program is a pathway to filling chief vacant job positions within Manitoba.
The temporary initiative indicates that 6,700 temporary workers might continue working while Manitoba processes the PNP applications. Manitoba anticipates that qualifying foreign nationals will obtain a formal nomination through it and finally acquire permanent residency within two years.
The immigration department is flexible about working with other provinces or territories to help a rising number of temporary residents become permanent residents and combat the nation’s labor market requirements. The FMRI will meet on May 10, after which more details will be available.
Manitoba’s PNP
The first province to implement the PNP was Manitoba. The province brought forth this program in 1988 to welcome new immigrants, which led to Canadian immigration to one of the largest urban centers. These include Toronto or Vancouver.
This program gained immense success in promoting the economic advantages of immigration. As a result, all other Canadian provinces or territories, except Nunavut and Quebec, adopted the PNP.
The data also demonstrates that nearly 10,000 individuals in Manitoba shifted from worker status to permanent residence in 2023.
Manitoba issued 1,560 Expressions of Interest to skilled workers between January and March 2024. These EOI’s led to 1,478 approvals.
IRCC’s data for 2022 also reflects that 20 percent of PR admissions occurred through the PNP. In addition, the Immigration Levels Plan outlines the admission targets for permanent residents annually. IRCC seeks to receive at least 110,000 new PRs toward the latter half of 2024. It will welcome 120,000 PRs in 2025 and 2026.
Modifications to TR levels
This initiative is a unique one in the Canadian immigration system. This measure is in sync with the previous declaration of 2024 and the upcoming years. On March 21, 2024, Marc Miller declared that he intends to conduct more domestic draws to assist TR to PR transition.
In other words, IRCC seeks to collaborate with new immigrants already in Canada to support their gain of Canadian PR. It is willing to take this step rather than enhancing the number of previously unrestricted TRs who come to the country each year. Last year, the country had a population of temporary residents surpassing 2.5 million individuals, or 6.2 percent of the entire population.
In 2023, 1,57,000 individuals shifted from temporary residence to Canadian permanent residence. These modifications at the temporary resident levels are being implemented at a stage where Canada is fighting the housing affordability crisis for both newcomers and Canadians. It is also a period when the nation is facing challenges with a rising cost of living and inadequate healthcare. In 2023, multiple surveys demonstrated reduced assistance for higher immigration levels.
