IRCC issued 2095 ITAs in the recent Express Entry general draw on April 23, 2024. This draw is the third one in April in which candidates had to score at least 529 points to receive an invitation. The previous two draws occurred on April 10 and 11. Out of the two draws, the April 10 draw was general, while the April 11 draw targeted STEM occupations.
On April 10, IRCCs sent 1,280 invitations to those who scored the lowest CRS score of 549. This appeared to be the highest CRS score in 2024 compared to other draws. Also, this CRS score marked a visible increase from the draw on March 25, in which candidates scored at least 524 points.
The other draw, which occurred on April 11, focused on STEM occupation candidates. It was the first draw of this category in 2024. The immigration department issued 4,500 candidates with the lowest CRS score of 491.

Category-based selection
The concept of Express Entry category-based draws emerged in May last year as a technique by IRCC. The immigration department conducted these types of draws to select skilled and experienced candidates. It focused on those who possessed in-demand human capital characteristics, including language abilities or occupations. In 2023, the final categories existed after consultations with IRCC’s stakeholders and partners. In the earlier part of 2024, IRCC declared it would maintain the same categories in the entire 2024. These include the following:
- Healthcare occupations
- STEM occupations
- Transport occupations
- Trade occupations – Carpenters, Contractors and Plumbers
- Agriculture and Agri-Food occupations
- Solid French language skills
Candidates working in occupational-based categories need at least six months of continuous experience (full-time) in an eligible profession over the previous three years. Those with French language test outcomes showing at least a 7 in all four language abilities per the NCLC will be considered eligible for the French proficiency category.
Express Entry
The Canadian government implemented Express Entry to streamline the immigration application system. This Express Entry system handles immigration applications for permanent residency in Canada through its three main programs. These three programs include the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the FSTP. Express Entry uses the Comprehensive Ranking System to assign scores to candidates. It carefully examines their ability to adapt and integrate well into the Canadian culture and society through human capital factors. These factors include education, age, language proficiency, work experience, and adaptability. Higher CRS scores lead to a candidate’s chance of getting an ITA. The idea is to select candidates who can add significantly to the Canadian economy and fulfill labor market needs.
