IRCC’s efforts to emphasize transport occupations under the Express Entry category-based draws are among the other chosen categories.
The commencement of category-based selection drawings occurred by IRCC on May 31st, according to Sean Fraser.
Candidates for Express Entry who have high French language skills or job experience in the following fields will gain preference from IRCC:
- Agriculture and Agri-Food
- Healthcare
- Transport
- Trades (Carpenters, Plumbers, and Contractors)
- STEM occupations
Following the information concerning shortages in the Canadian labor market, IRCC decided on the professions. The provinces, territories, and other stakeholders around the nation also offered their feedback to IRCC.
500 healthcare professionals were given the opportunity to apply for permanent residency in the first category-based Express Entry draw ever held by the IRCC on June 28. On July 5th, a second round with 1,500 ITAs is anticipated for healthcare professionals.
Another draw targeting STEM occupations is likely to occur on July 5.
Transport Occupations – the reason behind its selection
Employment and Social Development Canada reports that between 2019 and 2021, the number of occupations facing a shortage doubled.
Data on open positions as of Q4 2022 became available by Statistics Canada. For the purposes of the Statistics Canada data, the trades category includes both wholesale and retail trading. There were 30,930 job openings in the wholesale trades, compared to 108,795 in the retail businesses.
To improve Express Entry through category-based selection, IRCC organized a public consultation. During the engagement phase, various stakeholders and the general public participated in surveys for their opinions and suggestions.
Participating stakeholders generally favored adopting category-based selection to address labor market shortages in particular industries or occupations, and the majority offered concrete proposals.
Employment and Social Development Canada reports that between 2019 and 2021, the number of occupations with a shortage doubled.
Around 16% of respondents believed that of the categories stated, trades, transport, equipment operations, and related vocations had the highest demands. The demand remained consistent with the high percentage of respondents who worked in this industry.

The process of choosing the Express Entry category-based invitation rounds

- Work experience in a certain NOC TEER category
- English or French language proficiency
- Education
CRS score – what will be its relevance now?
There will also be draws based on categories in addition to general and program-specific draws. Top candidates who can support in achieving Canadian economic and labor market goals attain ITAs.
The Comprehensive Ranking System, a points-based mechanism, ranks applicants in the Express Entry pool. They attain these ranks through various criteria, including age, education, language proficiency, and work experience.
A candidate’s CRS score will still play a major role in category-based draws. Candidates who receive the highest-ranking scores and who are also qualified for the category-based draw will receive invites from IRCC.
