PGP is among the most popular Canadian immigration programs
The IRCC has still not decided about resuming the applications for PGP this year
The IRCC will welcome 25,000 immigrants under the PGP category. And this target will significantly rise to 28,500 in 2023 and 32,000 in 2024.
The IRCC would release all the information regarding PGP applications in January every year before the world was hit by the pandemic. But this time, it had released the details in the fall.
As PGP is among the most popular streams for immigrating to Canada. In 2020, the IRCC received a total of 2 lakh applications from citizens/residents of Canada willing to sponsor their biological mother, father, and their grandparents. This caused an increase in the number of applications received while the number of seats reserved was too small.
To resolve this issue, the IRCC decided to release a lottery, in which selected candidates get the opportunity to file their application for permanent residence sponsorship
The sponsor has to match all the below requirements-
- Holds the status of citizenship or permanent residency in Canada
- More than 18 years old
- Should be living in the Canadian province
- Matching the least income requirement for PGP.
Engaged partners can show their combined income as 1 unit. The proof of income has to be shown to the IRCC through a receipt from Canada Revenue Agency.
Notice of Assessment
This ensures attesting that the sponsor is financially viable to support their family member for 2 decades. Also, the sponsor has to promise repayment of all assistance made to the sponsored family member. The IRCC has recommended sponsors apply for a Super Visa for faster processing.
This Super Visa gives the facility to grandparents and mother-father to come to Canada for a tenure of 24 months. This Visa can also be renewed up to a tenure of a decade. The IRCC accepts Super Visa applications throughout the year.
The Super Visa is a recommended way for welcoming the grandparents and mother-father of residents/citizens of Canada. The sponsors have the freedom to apply for PGP while their parents have received the Super Visa.
