Nova Scotia will grant 12900 international study permits in 2024

Nova Scotia will grant 12900 international study permits in 2024. This allocation is for post-secondary institution students. The above figure is less than the international study permits issued in 2023. This indicates a decline of 7,000 study permits.

Last year, in October, Nova Scotia was home to nearly 16,000 international students with full-time admission, a testament to the province’s appeal as an educational destination. Nova Scotia eagerly looks forward to allocating study permits among its 32 Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). These institutions, the only Canadian post-secondary institutions with permission to receive international students, offer diverse programs and a supportive learning environment. The IRCC confirms that Nova Scotia consists of 41 Designated Learning Institutions, further expanding the options for prospective students.

The distribution of permits is as follows:

  • Nova Scotia Community College and 10 Universities in the province – 11,565
  • 12 Private Career Colleges – 710
  • 9 Language Schools – 526

The province confirms a decrease of 99 application slots to make room for unpredictable situations. The Minister of Advanced Education has adopted a contemplative approach to allocating the federal cap in Nova Scotia. He has done this while keeping in mind the admission to programs with greater requirements and handling communities’ progress.

The study permit federal cap came to the forefront on January 22 by IRCC as an initiative to stabilize Canada’s international students and enhance the longevity of the entire system.

Canada had to grant 360,000 international study permits to students this year, which is a decline of 35 percent compared to last year (2023).

The study permit figure syncs with the PALs a province can issue. In addition, it depends on the province to determine the process of issuing the Provincial Attestation Letters to study permit applicants with a LOA from a DLI.

Notably, the study permit cap is not meant for the following categories:

  • International students admitted to Master’s or Graduate Levels Degree Programs;
  • For those with study permits at present or
  • For study permit renewals

International Student applicants must consist of a PAL in their final study permit application submission.

Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island declared that it will grant 2,000 study permits to international students. These study permits will be allocated among three DLIs:

  • 105 study permits – College de I’lle
  • 710 study permits – Holland College
  • 1184 study permits – University of Prince Edward Island

The Department of Workforce, along with the Advanced Learning and Population, will offer PALs to DLIs. Furthermore, the DLIs will grant these to international student applicants when they submit their federal student permit application.

Distributions in different provinces

British Columbia and Ontario displayed their intention to reveal the allocation of PALs in the early part of March. Ontario will grant 96 percent of study permit allocation to public universities and colleges. Whereas, the remaining percentage will be classified among private institutions, language training schools, and other institutions throughout Ontario. However, the province didn’t reveal the number of allocations provided by the federal government.
