The Parents and Grandparents Program will begin again in May. The immigration department is ready to start issuing invitations to eligible sponsors. IRCC will begin sending invitations with effect from May 21 and hopes to send at least 35,700 invitations. It is likely to approve nearly 20,500 complete applications.
Eligibility for the Parents and Grandparents next round
IRCC recently announced that it intended to welcome the PGP 2020 candidates. Therefore, it is evident that those receiving invitations in the forthcoming invitation rounds must have already submitted their applications in 2020. According to the PGP system, applicants will receive invitations randomly through a lottery system. This will be the fourth consecutive year in which the PGP will only acknowledge application submissions in 2020.
The delivery of these invitations to sponsors using the email of the potential sponsor. They must have provided their email on the sponsor form showing their interest. Sponsors must check their emails as of May 21, inviting the sponsors within nearly two weeks of the date.
Parents and Grandparents Program to begin again in May – The process to obtain PR using the PGP
Applicants must fulfill the following parameters to obtain permanent residence in Canada through PGP:
- Ensure that all essential eligibility requirements are fulfilled, such as the potential to sponsor, living in Canada, undertaking signature, and meeting relevant compulsory income levels, etc.
- Go to the official website of IRCC to fill out the “interest sponsor form.” In addition, applicants must not have obtained an invitation to apply in 2021, 2022, and 2023 to gain eligibility for the round this year.
- After re-starting the PGP, check your interest to sponsor form and find the email. Do so on the reopening day and two weeks subsequently after the lottery begins again.
- Once an ITA has been acquired, sponsors must proceed with application submission through the PR portal or the representative residence portal.
After the application submission, IRCC will have at least 112 days to process it. IRCC had processed 67 percent of the applications between 2022 and 2023.
The details of PGP
The Parents and Grandparents Program enables Canadian citizenship or permanent resident holders to sponsor their parents and grandparents for PR in Canada. However, they must have met all the requirements. This contributes as a chief pillar of IRCC’s mission. Parents and grandparents who come to the country using the PGP receive permanent residence after they land here.
The additional steps these applicants must take are as follows:
- They must sign an undertaking.
- This undertaking must demonstrate that the applicant will financially assist their parents and grandparents while in Canada for twenty years.
- However, those applying from Quebec must sign an undertaking of ten years.
NOTE: The PGP only issues invitations to candidates based on a lottery system and takes applications just once a year.
What will happen in the case of non-selection?
Just like the Parents and Grandparents Program, IRCC also functions the Super-Visa pathway. This pathway enables Canadian citizenship and PR holders to sponsor their parents or grandparents. This means they can arrive in Canada through an extended visitor visa. Family members can obtain a visitor visa instead of applying for PR via the PGP. As a result, they will be able to reside in Canada temporarily.
PGP’s approved applicants can reside in Canada for five years at once, with the potential to prolong their stay for two years. Moreover, they will have the chance to apply again for the Super-Visa once their status expires.
Contrary to the Parents and Grandparents Program, IRCC functions with the Super-Visa for the entire year. Super-Visa applications have the service standard equivalent to PGP, with IRCC seeking to process all the applications within 112 days of receiving them.
