PGWP holders will be offered open work permits

PGWP holders will be given an open work permit for an additional time of one and a half years

The immigration minister of Canada made an announcement on April 22, that a temporary policy will be implemented for International Students to stay for a longer period of time in the country.

International students holding a Post-Graduation Work Permit whose validity is expiring this year and are residing in Canada become eligible for obtaining a work permit which will offer them an additional time of one and a half years.

Otherwise, the PGWP is not available for extensions and renewals.

A detailed procedure regarding the same will be released in the coming few years.

This provision is introduced to let PGWP holders gain more work experience and stay in the country for a longer duration which can facilitate them for Canadian permanent residency.

Although the applications for the CEC category have been put on pause since last year.

PGWP holders on the verge of the expiry of their tenure to live in the country are being pressured to either apply for a new work permit or to exit the country.

The IRCC claims that the validity of the tenure of 95,000 PGWP applicants will end this year. Under this, around 50,000 PGWP holders could benefit from the provision.

The provision for a Post-Graduation work permit along with various other provisions regarding the Economic Class was also announced by the Immigration Minister of Canada.

The application for CEC and FSWP categories will start to be released in July.

The IRCC is working hard to process the maximum number of backlog applications. It has processed more than one lakh applications for a work permit this year which was only half in the last year.

In the previous year, more than one lakh fifty thousand students were transitioned into Canadian permanent residents. Out of which 88,000 applicants directly turned into Canadian permanent residents from PGWP.
