PGWPs to extend post their expiry since September 20, 2021

A one-time extension is available for those holding PGWP, post-expiry between September 20, 2021, and December 31, 2012.

Mr. Sean Fraser also extended the date of eligibility from September 2021 to January 2022. Those candidates whose PGWP is going to expire soon will benefit from the new policy.

The main behind the change is to allow the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates to get an opportunity to apply through Express Entry for immigration purposes, especially those who haven’t applied since September 21, 2021.

IRCC halted the draws for candidates, most of them were PGWP holders. This change emerged because of the existing application backlog in immigration. It was recently reported that candidates could get back on track with the resumption of all-program draws from July 6 onwards.

The Open work permit is available for international student graduates who’re eligible under the full-time study programs. They can attain an open work permit for up to 3 years. With the new measure being introduced, those eligible PGWP holders will be allowed to get a new open work permit with up to 18 months of validity. The new measure was introduced in April while the details regarding the application process are yet to be disclosed.

As of now, the PGWP holders continue witnessing the expiry of documents. Consequently, putting them in uncertain and insecure situations. They might even need to get a new work permit, leave their jobs and move outside Canada.

Every year, thousands of PGWP holders get converted to permanent residents due to their merging with the Canadian Labour Market, which comes from their Canadian study and work experience.

In 2021, over 88,000 PGWP holders turned out to be permanent residents. The government believes that the new measure will benefit over 50,000 people.
