Suppose you hold Canadian citizenship and permanent residency while having a relationship with a foreign national, you might want to sponsor them later on. Sponsoring your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner could be your next step.
To gain eligibility for spousal or common-law partner sponsorship, you will need to prove the authenticity of your relationship before IRCC. Demonstrating your spousal relationship with Canadian immigration is essential. You can use the supporting documents to do so. You will prove your spousal relationship for Canadian immigration only if you have a spouse or partner.
Authenticating your spousal relationship
IRCC tests your spousal relationship and also provides you with a document checklist. You can use the checklist to prove your spousal relationship for Canadian immigration.
Take a look at the following document requirements:
- Make sure you complete the questionnaire on “Relationship Information and Sponsorship Evaluation”.
- You must also submit your marriage certificate to prove your marriage registration authorized by the government.
- Suppose your spouse underwent a divorce, you will have to prove that too.
- In the case of children, providing birth certificates or adoption records with the parent’s name on them.
- Proving spousal relationships through wedding photographs and invitations.
Providing a minimum of two of the following documents is mandatory for couples:
- Demonstrating the couple’s ownership of residential property together.
- The couples must also display that they even occupy the property through a Rental agreement.
- Proof of having joint accounts related to gas, telephone, internet, electricity, credit cards as well as bank accounts.
- Proving the same residential address of the couple through the car insurance statement.
- A government-approved driving license implying the same residential address.
- Proving the same residential address with the help of supporting documents related to pay stubs, phone bills, etc.
Relationship between you and your partner
It is vital to follow the given list of documents by IRCC and prove your relationship with your partner.
You will have to demonstrate the relationship with your partner through the following evidence:
- Submitting a complete questionnaire referred to as a Relationship Information and Sponsorship Evaluation.
- Displaying proof of separation if one spouse among the two was married.
- If any one of the partners was involved with a common-law partner previously, they must fill out the IMM 5519 form.
- Copies of the birth certificates (long format) with the mention of both parents, if they had children together.
- Couples photographed together.
Both partners in a relationship must provide at least two of the following documents.
Suppose you’re unable to provide them then a written explanation is a must.
- Present proof of employment or insurance benefits to prove your relationship with your partner.
- Displaying evidence of the common-law partners sharing financial responsibilities.
- Supporting proof that your friends and acquaintances identify your relationship. You could present social media details to authenticate the relationship as public.
In case both partners are currently living together, they have to present the documents for the following (any two):
- Proving that they own a residential property together. Showing proof of rental agreement to demonstrate that they own joint property.
- Demonstrating proof related to joint accounts. You could present proof including gas, electricity, internet or telephone.
- Presenting proof of joint bank accounts or credit cards.
- Car insurance evidence to demonstrate that they are declared as occupants of the same residential address.
- A driver’s license proof (as authorized by the government) displaying the same address for both partners.
- Displaying proof of mobile bills, pay slips, financial statements, tax payment records, and copies of insurance policies.
If both partners are living apart, proving that they have a previous record of staying together for at least one year.
To do so, you must provide the following set of documents:
- They must display their togetherness with several contact sources. These could include printed text messages, emails, social media chats, etc. The evidence they provide will maximize up to 10 pages.
- Proof that the partner holding Canadian citizenship or permanent residency has met the partner. You could display evidence of flight tickets, stamped copies of passports, or boarding passes. If no visits occurred between the two partners, the sponsored party must explain the situation. They could do so through the IMM 5532 questionnaire by answering the C part of the fourth question.
