The Canadian Government took the step of disapproving students enrolled in private colleges of Quebec for PGWP, to safeguard international students. The federal government mentions in favor of the step that it will safeguard the integrity of international students enrolled in the province of Quebec.
Several journalists and Quebec’s Ministry of Higher Education conducted their investigation and found out that private institutes were using unethical practices for recruitment purposes.
International students who were enrolled in private colleges in other Canadian provinces didn’t have the eligibility to submit their applications for PGWP. The province of Quebec will now have to follow the same policy after the measure comes into effect. Although students who were enrolled in any subsidized study program will be eligible for the PGWP.
The Immigration Minister of Canada said that the more the number of international students, the more will be the economic, social, and cultural benefits to the country.
And introducing the provision in the PGWP category will lead to the enhancement of international students’ integrity. Additionally, it will align the province of Quebec with other provinces regarding the eligibility criteria. Private institutes that are unsubsidized have had more potential in attracting international students since 2018. And approximately 5,000 international students belonging to such institutions have been granted study permits between 2016 and 2018.
And from 2019 to 2020 the number significantly increased to 11,500 study permits granted.
What is PGWP?
PGWP (Post Graduation Work Permit) is one of the most prominent categories of open work permits which grants Canadian permanent residence by targeting international scholars and offering them the opportunity to engage in work opportunities for a Canadian employer.
Several statistical data shows that Immigrants possessing an experience in Canadian jobs are likely to be hired in the Canadian labor market as compared to the ones who directly migrate to Canada from their native country.
The eligibility criteria of PGWP require its student candidates to have completed their study program (degree, certificate, and diploma course) pursued at any Designated Learning Institutions of Canada for a minimum period of 8 months.
The Canadian Government took Covid into consideration and allowed their students to count online studies towards the eligibility for PGWP.
Students learning via online mode during March 2020 and 31st August can be counted towards the eligibility for Post Graduation Work Permit.
