Express Entry candidates won’t need an upfront medical examination

Express Entry candidates will no longer need an upfront medical examination before submitting their Canadian permanent residence application to IRCC. This is with effect from October 1. Even though the exam is still prevalent, candidates will have the choice to submit a blank page in the builder profile of Express Entry. Furthermore, IRCC will later send you the instructions concerning the exam.

In addition, those who would like to submit their IME as part of their IRCC application or already reside in Canada will not need a second submission of IME.

The recent Express Entry draw invited PNP candidates – defining Express Entry

Express Entry is a system of handling immigration applications through its three primary programs such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the FSTP, and the Canadian Experience Class.

These programs evaluate candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System based on a few human capital factors. These include language skills, work experience, occupation, age, and education.

Each characteristic of the candidate receives scores, and on adding up all these factors, the scores rise to a maximum of 1200 points. However, this score is hard to achieve, and most candidates tend to receive scores between 350-550. Also, the CRS scores may sometimes exceed this range based on the draw type.

On the whole, only high-scoring candidates are likely to receive ITAs to apply for PR status in Canada.

Express Entry category-based selection draws

At the beginning of this year, IRCC launched draw categories with more emphasis on work experience in specific skilled occupations or French language proficiency. These new categories will not target a person with high CRS scores when it comes to sending ITAs.

A law passed in June 2022 enabled the immigration minister to authorize and issue invitations to candidates who can fulfill the country’s economic needs. These could also be candidates with strong French skills who can help promote the language.

Furthermore, this law enabled IRCC to introduce six new categories in May for candidates having either work experience or strong French skills.

The new categories are as follows:

  • STEM professions;
  • Transport;
  • Trade;
  • Healthcare; and
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food

Until now, Canada has issued invitations to candidates around ten times through the Express Entry category-based draws. This also means that Canada sent more than 10,000 ITAs. All candidates existed in the pool of Express Entry.
