The work permit agreement broadens between Canada and the UK

The work permit agreement broadens between Canada and the UK, per the latest reports.

A new Canada-United Kingdom (UK) Youth Mobility Arrangement was officially signed today, according to a statement from the two countries.
This new agreement is likely to go into force in 2024. It makes several modifications to the two countries’ current youth mobility pact:

  • Increasing the age range for eligibility to 18–35.
  • Two new streams have been added for UK citizens relocating to Canada.
  • Extension of the visa period up to three years.

Ages 18 to 30 can participate in the existing arrangement, and a two-year visa is essential. The Youth Mobility Pact first came out in 2008. It intends to encourage reciprocal employment possibilities in each nation.

The International Experience Canada program of the Canadian government oversees youth mobility agreements. IEC provides three divisions:

  • Open work permits are available to Working Holiday participants, enabling them to work for any employer in Canada.
  • Participants in international Co-op (internships) may be eligible for an employer-specific work visa. This visa would enable students to learn knowledge pertinent to their studies.
  • Young Professional participants can obtain a work permit unique to their workplace. Doing so will help them earn specialized work experience related to their course of study or intended vocation.

With 37 nations, Canada has agreements governing youth movement.

Canada will provide IEC to about 90,000 young people worldwide in 2023. IEC is one strategy the Canadian government is using to address the labor shortages in the nation.

Additionally, since 2008, more than 240,000 Canadians have taken part in IEC.
Young people from the UK are in a good position to transfer to permanent residence once they arrive in Canada.

By 2025, Canada hopes to approve 500,000 new permanent residents yearly. Over 437,000 new immigrants arrived in Canada last year, a record. To maintain Canada’s economic and budgetary stability, as more than 9 million baby boomers reach retirement age over the next ten years, the country has high immigration rates.

The bulk of immigrants to Canada gained acceptance based on economic class.

Canada’s federal and provincial governments share responsibility for immigration. Both levels of government offer incentives for people with Canadian job experience to move to the country permanently. This is partly because research conducted by the Canadian government demonstrates that domestic job experience boosts positive labor market results if a person moves in permanently.

Federal and provincial economic class programs evaluate applicants based on their human capital. These include age, education, language ability, and work experience. Additional factors such as previous work or study experience in Canada and close familial ties to the nation also count.

Therefore, young people from the UK who immigrate to Canada through IEC are in a good position to transition to permanent residence. This is largely due to factors like their youth, English fluency, and Canadian job experience.
