Canada will introduce a new pathway for Ukrainians to apply for PR

Canada will introduce a new pathway for Ukrainians to apply for PR. This is likely to take effect in October.

The Canadian government revealed on Saturday that it will open a new route in October to allow Ukrainians living there to seek permanent residency.

Ukrainians who hold temporary residence status in Canada and at least one Canadian family member will be able to use the new pathway beginning on October 23, 2023. In the months leading up to the program’s introduction in October, more information will become accessible, according to IRCC.

Ukrainian spouses, common-law partners, parents, grandparents, siblings, and children or grandchildren of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident are among the individuals who will be eligible, according to IRCC.

Under the interim special measures provided by the Canadian government, Ukrainians who possess a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) visa will have until March 31, 2024, to travel to Canada. On July 15, Canada stopped accepting new CUAET applications; however, Ukrainians and members of their families will still be able to apply for a temporary resident visa to enter Canada.

Ukrainians and their families will be able to stay in Canada for up to three years after arriving on a TRV through study permits and open work permits, which IRCC will give priority. They will also have access to settlement services, such as assistance with finding work and language instruction.

The CUAET has facilitated the immigration of nearly 166,000 Ukrainians to Canada since its establishment in March 2022.
