Canada Will Launch Faster SIN Access For Newcomers

Canada will launch faster SIN access for newcomers, i.e., the Canadian government plans to introduce a new system called SIN@Entry in the fall of 2027. This program will allow newcomers to get their Social Insurance Number (SIN) online before they arrive in Canada.

The service will be available to all newcomers, including foreign workers, international students, and new permanent residents. With this change, they will be able to start working and access government benefits much faster after arriving in the country.

At present, newcomers can apply for a SIN online. However, they must already be in Canada, and the process can take up to five business days to complete.

Note: A SIN is a nine-digit number required by residents in Canada to perform a list of basic functions, including (but not limited to):

  • Legally working and getting paid
  • Filing income taxes
  • Accessing government-funded benefits and programs

Without a SIN, it is not possible to start a job or receive payments such as the Canada Child Benefit or GST/HST credit. For newcomers, getting a SIN is one of the first and most important steps after arriving in Canada.

How The New SIN@Entry System Will Work?

According to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), the new system will make the process much simpler.

Under SIN@Entry, newcomers will be able to request their SIN through their Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) online account. After the request is processed, the SIN will be shared digitally through their My Service Canada Account.

This means there will be no need to visit a Service Canada office, apply through a separate system, or wait for a letter by mail. The goal is to reduce delays and help newcomers access jobs and benefits quickly.

Earlier reports from March 2025 described SIN@Entry as a combined and automated service that connects immigration and SIN systems. It was originally expected to launch earlier, but is now planned for fall 2027.

Who Is Eligible To Get A SIN?

To receive a SIN in Canada, a person must fall under one of the following groups:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • A permanent resident
  • A temporary resident with a valid work permit
  • A temporary resident whose study permit allows off-campus work
  • A person who is legally allowed to work in Canada under immigration laws

If a person’s immigration status changes, such as when a work permit expires, they may need to update their SIN details with Service Canada.

Current Ways To Apply For A SIN

Until SIN@Entry becomes available in 2027, newcomers can still apply for a SIN using existing methods:

  • In person at a Service Canada location — the SIN is usually given on the same day
  • Online through the eSIN system — processing takes about five business days
  • By mail — processing takes about 20 business days after the application is received

Newcomers can also apply for a SIN at certain Canadian airports through a service called SIN@Landing. This service is available at Toronto Pearson, Montréal Trudeau, Vancouver, Halifax Stanfield, Calgary, and Edmonton airports.

Note: Service Canada centres at airports do not operate all day. It is advised that newcomers check the opening hours before planning to apply at the airport.

This new program is expected to make the arrival process smoother for newcomers. By giving faster access to a SIN, Canada aims to help them settle, work, and access benefits without delays.
