British Columbia Extends A Rural PR Pathway Deadline

British Columbia has extended the registration deadline for its Temporary Rural/Remote Health Support Initiative (TRHSI), giving eligible workers more time to register for the pathway to permanent residence (PR).

The new deadline is midnight on October 7, 2026. Registration was originally scheduled to close on August 31, 2026.

This pathway helps certain cleaners and security workers who work for a British Columbia health authority in qualifying rural and remote areas.

The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP) plans to nominate up to 250 eligible workers through the temporary pathway.

Registration opened on June 15, 2026. Since then, 60 candidates have received invitations to apply for provincial nomination through the initiative.

The province announced the deadline extension on August 13. The change was made to account for possible impacts caused by wildfires.

About The Temporary Rural/Remote Health Support Initiative

The TRHSI was introduced in April 2026 as part of changes to the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program. The province has placed a stronger focus on healthcare and other key workers.

The pathway is open to foreign nationals who have a full-time job offer from a B.C. health authority in an eligible rural or remote area.

Eligible occupations include:

  • Janitors, caretakers, and heavy-duty cleaners (NOC 65312).
  • Light-duty cleaners (NOC 65310).
  • Security guards and related security service occupations (NOC 64410).

The job must be located in a qualifying rural or remote area. The area must be outside the Central Okanagan Regional District, Metro Vancouver Regional District, and Capital Regional District.

Well, there are some exceptions within the Capital Regional District. These include Galiano Island, Mayne Island, Pender Island, Salt Spring Island, and Saturna Island.

Health Authorities Supporting The Pathway

Eligible workers must work for one of the participating public health authorities in British Columbia.

There are eight public health authorities that can employ workers under the initiative:

  • First Nations Health Authority.
  • Fraser Health.
  • Interior Health.
  • Island Health.
  • Northern Health.
  • Providence Health Care.
  • Provincial Health Services Authority.
  • Vancouver Coastal Health.

Each health authority has its own rules for deciding which provincial nomination applications it will support.

However, health authorities do not have to support every application submitted by an eligible worker.

Main Requirements For Applicants

Workers must meet the job offer and work experience requirements to qualify for the TRHSI.

Candidates must have at least nine months of full-time work experience in an eligible occupation before registering. The required experience must have been gained while working for a B.C. health authority.

Applicants must also have a high school diploma and meet the minimum income requirement during the required period before registration and application.

Moreover, applicants must also meet the other general requirements under the BCPNP Skills Immigration stream.

The province has published detailed requirements for the TRHSI and other Skills Immigration applications in its program guide.

Workers who receive a provincial nomination through the TRHSI can then apply to the federal government for permanent residence.

The deadline extension gives eligible rural and remote health support workers additional time to register for the temporary pathway. However, applicants must still meet all program requirements and receive support from an eligible B.C. health authority.
