PGWP & its Eligibility Criteria

Post-Graduation Work Permit holders can reside and work in anywhere in the Canadian province after completing their graduation from any Designated Learning Institute of Canada. This work permit is only offered once in a lifetime to every applicant.

Below are the requirements that an applicant has to fulfill to get a post-graduation work permit 

  • The candidate has to apply within 3 months of getting their official degree 
  • The candidate should graduate from any of the Designates Learning Institutes
    • A government-based post-secondary institute consisting of a university or college
    • Private-based post-secondary institutes in the province of Quebec with the same management system as of public institutes of Quebec.
    • Any public or private institute based in Quebec has a Diploma of Vocational Studies at least 900 hours whereas attestation of vocational specialization of at least 900 hours.
  • Completion of any program or vocational training for 8 months with a valid certificate.
  • Should possess a status of a full-time student during studies
  • To show the completion of the program a student has to show a valid letter and transcript received from DLI.

Exceptional Cases of PGWP  

There are a few exceptional cases in which an applicant is granted a post-graduation work permit even though he/she is ineligible.  

  • If the applicant has completed the program before the actual completion time.  
  • If the student grants a leave from the program 
  • In case of transfer of student to an institute of DLI from a non-DLI institute for at least 8 months. 

Application process and documents for PGWP  

  • Submitting the form on the IRCC website  
  • Submitting documents, fingerprints, and their respective fees.  
  • There may be a probability of an interview. 

Approved candidates living in Canada can start working in Canada whereas candidates living outside of Canada have to show a letter to the authorities. 

Documents Required  

  • Legal ID proof 
  • Latest photographs of the immigrant and their accompanying family members 
  • Employment proof 
  • Transcript of letter from their DLI 
  • Students who wish to work in Quebec should submit the Certificated ’acceptation du Quebec. 
  • Proof showing the relation of accompanying partner 
  • Submission of a copy of English/French translated document of any document not submitted in either of both languages. 
  • Submission of photographs and fingerprints 

The actual processing time of the Post-Graduation Work Permit is three and a half months. This time period is applicable to both categories of applications either submitted online or offline.  

Valid Time Duration

The valid time duration of a post-graduation work permit highly depends on the length of the study program.  

  • Post-graduation work permit for the Study program with a time duration ranging from 8 months to 24 months will be of the same duration as the length of the program.  
  • The validity of the post-graduation work permit is 2 years which further extends up to more than three years.  
  • If the student has completed numerous programs with a minimum time duration of 8 months. The validity of the post-graduation work permit, in this case, will be equal to the total time duration spent on completing all the programs.  

Expiration of passports before Post Graduation Work Permit

  • In case of expiration of passport before the total validity of work permit. The candidate is provided with a PGWP of validity equivalent to the validity of the passport.  
  • Otherwise, the candidates are contacted by the personnel of immigration in case their passport needs an extension to its full valid time period.  

Reformations made in PGWP during COVID  

They had made certain modifications in the post-graduation work permit. If the classes of the student were shifted to virtual mode, part time mode, put on halt during any time in 2020, the student is eligible to match the eligibility requirement of the work permit.
